Fast ways to learn this summer

Hello Reader,

Here in the UK we’re mid-way through the summer and it’s both dragging (if you have kids that need support for non-screen based activities while still working full-time you’ll know what I mean) and going quickly.

One thing I am trying to do is make time to keep learning. I’ve got a bit lazy recently, so in case that sounds like you too, here are 3 signs that you need to speed up your learning.

  • Your PDU deadline is fast approaching and you haven’t got enough banked with PMI or your professional body.
  • Everyone on your team is talking about the latest trends that you know nothing about (agentic AI, anyone?).
  • You haven’t read a new book about your field or a related management topic for 6 months.

I’ve been prioritising other things recently, and I think it shows. It’s not enough to do your learning a year ago or earlier in your career and coast.

So… my summer holiday reading is The Emotionally Intelligent Team by Vanessa Urch Druskat. Plus a Harlan Coben novel because it can’t be about work all the time, right?

If you do plan on some professional development over the next few months, check out these ways to earn PDUs fast.

And if you want some suggestions for reading or audiobooks, I have lists of recommended books here.

Have a great week,

Elizabeth

Hello Reader, We need to make it EASY for stakeholders to work with us. During a podcast I recorded with the Customer Success Playbook team, I shared my stakeholder prioritization grid – a tool that's helped countless project managers navigate the maze of competing expectations. But here's the real secret: it's not about managing stakeholders; it's about understanding what they value most. We shouldn’t think about ‘managing’ other people’s behaviour. Instead, think about engaging them. Here’s...

Hello Reader, One of the things that comes up often with new members of Project Management Rebels is how to facilitate a project meeting without knowing anything about what anyone else is talking about. Especially at the beginning, you’re not an expert. So you have very little to contribute in terms of content or helpful insights. What you can do is own the job you actually have and facilitate the process. Think about how you can add value with your comments without simply agreeing. You can...

Hello Reader, Six projects. Competing deadlines. Stakeholders pulling in different directions. Sound familiar?Managing multiple projects isn’t just about working harder. It’s about building systems that work for you. Without repeatable practices, even the most experienced project manager risks burnout, missed deadlines, and deliverables slipping through the cracks.I'll be chatting live with Cornelius Fichtner to explore what’s new in the second edition of my book Managing Multiple Projects....
