Join me on Wednesday (PM training)

Hello Reader,

These days, everyone is running projects. Whether you are a team leader, EA/PA, event planner, software tester... the list goes on.

On Wednesday I'm leading a one-off training session on PM Basics: what to do, how to get started, how to break down the work, and keep everyone happy.

If you've got new starters in the team, people you mentor or colleagues who would benefit, please pass the details on! Equally, if you are feeling like it wouldn't hurt to have a quick refresher yourself, then please join me.

The training is on 13 November, 7.00 pm UK time (2.00 pm EDT).

You will leave the live training knowing:

  • How to identify what success looks like
  • The challenge of balancing time, cost, and quality and how to do it the right way
  • Practical tips for prioritizing work and managing your time
  • How to manage expectations so that satisfaction levels stay high — even if you hit delays or problems.

And you'll get a couple of templates that will help you identify priorities and get everyone on the same page about what work needs to be done so you can kick things off properly (without it feeling like you've got to jump through loads of hoops).

It costs $7. Learn more and book your place here:

I hope to see you next week!

Elizabeth

P.S. If this isn't the right training for you, then Coursera probably has a course that is a better fit. I've done project management, programme management, AI, mentoring and leadership courses via Coursera. Their annual Plus account is 40% until 12 December.

Hello Reader, Most project managers don’t actually manage “their” team. We manage people who report to someone else. Welcome to matrix life! If you’ve ever tried to: Negotiate resource availability Handle conflicting priorities Run a meeting that doesn’t derail Get alignment without formal authority …you know the plan is only half the job. Most of what I seem to spend my days doing is negotiating, trying to get the right people to show up, slotting my work around other people's priorities...

Hello Reader, I've been asked more than once by project managers who are quietly worried about it: what do you do when your RAG status doesn’t tell the full story? The traffic light is green. Technically everything is on track. And yet you have this nagging feeling that something’s not quite right, a dependency that’s wobbling, a sponsor who’s gone quiet, a team that’s delivering but only just, and they're not as proactive as they used to be. RAG is a simple tool for a complicated job, and...

Hello Reader, Let’s talk about your schedule. Is it: A) Calm, realistic and under controlB) Optimistic but technically possibleC) Held together with hope and conditional formatting No judgement. (At least, not much!) Scheduling is one of those core PM skills that looks simple… until you’re actually doing it. I’ve pulled together my best articles on project scheduling into one place, from estimating and building timelines through to managing slippage and dealing with reality when it hits....
