How to get promoted in project management

Hello Reader,

Whether you’re actively job hunting or just quietly wondering what your next step looks like, career progression in project management doesn’t happen by accident.

We have to make a plan, move towards it, and take active steps to get what we want... something I've been very bad at recently! I've been thinking about going for a certification, reading about it and making a folder to store my notes in... but not actually doing anything towards it (although does watching a webinar count?).

Don't be like me! I’ve brought together my best articles on getting hired, getting promoted, and succeeding at interview into one place to make things easier for you.

You’ll find guidance on:

  • Writing a project management CV/resume that shows outcomes
  • Preparing for competency-based interviews
  • Moving from project coordinator to project manager
  • Positioning yourself for promotion
  • Deciding whether qualifications will really help

A lot of career advice online is generic. Project management careers are different. They’re built on delivery credibility, stakeholder management, and visible impact.

If you’re even slightly considering a move this year, it’s worth reviewing these resources properly.

Even if you’re not applying anywhere right now, preparation pays off. And if you are actively applying, my interview prep kit has all the questions, answer prompts, cut and paste text and guidance you need to ace the interview!

Have a lovely week.

best wishes,

Elizabeth

Hello Reader, You might have heard that the PMP exam is changing later this week. And if you've already got your PMP certification or have zero plans to do it, you might wonder why that is news. Honestly, it's not really, because unless you are mid-way through your exam prep this change won't affect you in any day-to-day way. However, it is interesting to see how PMI thinks the work that project managers do is changing. Questions across the PMP certification domains will be split like this...

Hello Reader, Everyone in our world is talking about AI productivity gains. The numbers being thrown around are bold: 10x faster, 10x more output, 10x the capacity. The research I’ve seen suggests real-world productivity gains from AI are often more modest than the headline numbers. So when Creatio named their major platform release the “10x Release”, I wanted to see what they actually mean by it. That’s one of the reasons I’m tuning in to Creatio’s 10x Release event on July 15. Creatio is...

Hello Reader, I get messages fairly regularly from people who are part-way through the Google Project Management Certificate and have started wondering whether it's actually going to lead anywhere. Which is a very reasonable thing to wonder, and I'd rather give you an honest answer than a cheerful one. The short version is that it can genuinely open doors, particularly if you're moving into project management from another field or you're in the early stages of your career and need something...
