Take ownership of managing project priorities

Hello Reader,

In my survey of 570 project managers (the results of which I still haven’t written up, sorry), I was kind of surprised to see that half of project managers prioritise their own workload.

They can’t rely on a manager or project management software to identify what’s important and what’s not, so they are going on professional judgement.

I know what that’s like, and you might do too – it’s trying not to be the person who responds to the loudest voice while having to work out corporate priorities based on your best guess… not a great place to be.

So project prioritisation is a key issue for project professionals, whether you work as a BA or a PM, or in a PMO role. I came across a resource from Laura Brandenburg at Bridging the Gap for kick-starting prioritisation discussions.

It’s a Project Prioritisation Organiser a project request form, a business process document, a project portfolio template, a full guidebook and meeting agendas so you can have structured conversations with your peers and leaders.

When you take ownership of managing project priorities, you'll:

  • Be involved upfront in scoping and determining ROI on ALL new projects, and have a bird's eye view of how decisions get made.
  • Position yourself as someone who deserves a seat at a more powerful table, as the Steering Committee you create will often be made up of stakeholders 1-2 levels up from you.
  • Provide a solution to your organization's most challenging problems – and be seen as a problem solver and a change agent.

So, if that sounds like something you and your team would benefit from, I recommend taking a look!

Laura is a tried-and-tested resource for this kind of thing, and I’ve used lots of her products in the past – why reinvent the wheel when someone has done it for you?

Have a great week!

Elizabeth

Hello Reader, Let’s be honest; we all have at least one (or ten) tasks on the To-do list that probably should have been finished days ago (weeks, months ago…??). Maybe it’s doing a report when no one is chasing for it. Maybe it’s some kind of ongoing professional development that you never seem to have time for. Or maybe it’s sticking to the habit of capturing actions after meetings or something. It’s silly. We all know this stuff is important. And if we can just get them done, the payoff...

Hello Reader, It's almost the end of the year! Have you prepped for your annual review yet, or started thinking about reviews for members of your team? I want to start 2025 strong, with more focus on balance. I have spent Q4 working bizarre hours on one project and I need to shift that around. What about you? It is a good time to be thinking about what you want to get out of 2025, even if you know that your plans and goals are likely to change. Is it training you're after? Is it a promotion?...
